Intrusion

Intrusion
40in x 30in
oil on canvas

A portrait of Sarah Z.

Life is noisy. Any given moment we might hear a knock at the door, or the telephone may chime, or ring, or shout or play the theme of “Dr. Who”. Some intrusions are tolerable, others less so. When we seek quiet, sooner or later we’ll likely crave company; when we have company we’ll crave quiet. In either noise or quiet, calm will be difficult to obtain and when we prepare all things for our ideal comfort, a moment will occur between the seconds when we will be surprised and possibly annoyed, or startled, but certainly disturbed, while the current of our thoughts is more or less opposed and then channeled and finally released again.

Life is measured by intrusions, and even avoiding anticipation of their imminent arrival can be as futile as the thought of holding back the passage of time with the most subtle whiff of violence mingled with perfume on a breeze, counting from one to five and five to one.
